GREENSBORO — The Rev. Howard Chubbs, thought to be the city’s longest-serving pastor and a former chairman of the N.C. A&T board of trustees, died Thursday, according to the News & Record.
Chubbs, 79, served as the pastor of Providence Baptist Church for the past 49 years. He had not been in the pulpit in recent months because of an undisclosed illness.
“Even though he was sick, he knew about me being sick, and he still called me up until 10 days ago,” said church member Ralph Shelton, the founder of Southeast Fuels. “He always said, ‘Listen, Ralph, we’ll be OK either way.’ He said, ‘We are going to keep one hand in God’s hand, and we are going to be OK.’ ”
