GREENSBORO, N.C. — A memorial will be held for Civil Rights leader Franklin McCain Thursday, Jan. 16.

The service will take place from 10 a.m.-noon, at Harrison Auditorium at N.C. A&T University.

McCain’s funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3400 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte.

It is open to the public.

Those who plan to attend should RSVP at http://directory.ncat.edu/mccain/register/.

While a student at N.C. A&T State University, McCain and three other A&T freshmen, now known as the “Greensboro Four,” initiated the sit-in movement when they sat down at the F. W. Woolworth lunch counter in Greensboro on Feb. 1, 1960, and requested service.

The consequences of their courageous action have become a permanent part of the nation’s civil rights legacy.

McCain died last Thursday after a brief illness.
