GREENSBORO, NC — Guilford County Schools will raise the price of school lunches by five cents starting at the beginning of next school year, according to the High Point Enterprise.

GCS Director of Nutrition Jim Faggione said the changes comes as the result of a 2010 federal law concerning how the USDA funds school lunch programs.

Part of the reason for the increase in costs is that a different part of the same law requires school lunch food to be healthier.

Faggione said some of the money made from the increase will be used to improve infrastructure, such as ovens and service line renovations.

Guilford County Schools served more than 8 million meals during the 2011-2012 school year. The USDA reimbursed GCS more than $23 million for those meals.
