Bill calls for new psychiatric hospital for Forsyth, central N.C.


The state would build a new psychiatric hospital serving Forsyth County and other parts of central North Carolina under a bill co-sponsored by state Rep. Julia Howard, R-Davie, The Winston-Salem Journal reports.

The bill would create a new service area that would stretch from Forsyth County to the South Carolina border and would authorize $24 million in the 2013-14 fiscal year toward planning, site development and construction of a 200-bed psychiatric hospital somewhere in the 14-county region. Another $96 million would be appropriated in 2014-15 toward construction.

The hospital would be the state’s fourth psychiatric hospital, in addition to Broughton in Morganton, Central Regional in Butner and Cherry in Goldsboro.

The total cost is unknown, Howard said, but the important thing is to start.
